What are Aquatic Invasive Species?

Aquatic invasive species (AIS) (sometimes called exotic, invasive, nonindigenous or non-native) are aquatic organisms that invade ecosystems beyond their natural, historic range. Their presence may harm native ecosystems or commercial, agricultural, or recreational activities dependent on these ecosystems. They may even harm our health. Preventing the spread of AIS is important because once introduced, these species disrupt ecosystems, reduce biodiversity, and cost communities huge amounts of time, money, resources, and lost revenue. Please do you part to help control AIS.
  • Prevent the transport of nuisance species.
  • Clean all recreational equipment.
  • When you leave a body of water: Remove any visible mud, plants, fish or animals before transporting equipment.
  • Clean and dry anything that comes into contact with water (boats, trailers, equipment, clothing, dogs, etc.).
  • Never release plants, fish or animals into a body of water unless they came out of that body of water.
